Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a release.
Law enforcement report they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.
The substance had been placed in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then found many other vandalized cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under laws outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement state preliminary tests indicate the substance was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; authorities are currently not aware of any injuries in connection with the incident," they added.
Local authorities stated they were trying "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the public for information.
A senior political figure said the incident left him stunned and required to be resolved rapidly.
"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack in 2020," he posted on online, referring to the murder of nine victims by a gunman aiming at individuals of foreign heritage in February 2020.
